Biography
Zhiguo He is the James Irvin Miller Professor of Finance at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is a leading financial economist whose research spans financial markets, financial institutions, and macroeconomics, with a strong focus on asset pricing, market frictions, and financial stability. His recent academic work also includes research on Chinese financial markets and emerging developments in digital finance, cryptocurrencies, and blockchain-based systems.
Prior to joining Stanford GSB, Professor He served on the faculty of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business from 2008 to 2023, where he received tenure in 2015 and led the Becker Friedman Institute China Initiative from 2020 to 2023. His scholarly work has been published in the world’s leading journals in finance and economics and is widely recognized for its theoretical depth and policy relevance.
Professor He currently serves as Editor of the Review of Asset Pricing Studies and has previously held editorial roles at several top academic journals. He also served as Guest Editor of the Review of Finance Special Issue on China. His contributions have earned numerous prestigious awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, the Lehman Brothers Fellowship for Research Excellence in Finance, the Swiss Finance Institute Outstanding Paper Award, the Smith-Breeden First Prize, and the Brattle Group First Prize.
Professor He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, and his PhD in Finance from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in 2008. Before entering academia, he worked as a stock analyst at China International Capital Corporation (CICC) in Beijing and later held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Bendheim Center for Finance at Princeton University.
He has held visiting and distinguished appointments at leading institutions, including Stanford GSB and Yale School of Management. In addition to his academic leadership, Professor He has contributed to public policy discussions, including testimony before the U.S.–China Economic and Security Review Commission on issues related to global capital markets and China’s financial development.
